Djamileh Full Score

£95.00 plus shipping

Description

The one-act opera Djamileh belongs to the period following the Siege of Paris that included Bizet’s late masterpieces L’Arlésienne and Carmen. Although cast in the traditional form of an opéra-comique with comedy and dialogue, it exhibits Bizet’s tireless invention and his command of colourful orchestration in telling a middle-eastern story in which love triumphs over tradition. He himself said of it: “What pleases me more than the opinions of the press is the absolute certainty that I have found my way. I know what I am doing.”

The volumes are printed on high-quality paper 22.5 x 32 cm, in a stiff paper binding. The scores include Dialogue in its proper place and provide Critical Notes that summarise the history of the work and its sources and give information on alternative readings. The scores are laid out in a manner that best serves the reader or conductor. Since it was normal in French music of this period to call for clarinets and brass instruments in a variety of different keys, often simultaneously, these lines are printed at sounding pitch (in the orchestral parts the players are reading the original pitches).

Performance material is available on hire.
