“No one has done more for the recognition, editing and analysis of French opera, especially Berlioz, than Hugh Macdonald. And now his recent work into another French great is rectifying years of neglect and scandalous editing. Bizet gave birth to one of the most popular operas of all time but Macdonald’s new brilliant research and editing will now raise the awareness and hopefully the performance of his other worthy operas.”

John Nelson: Honorary Music Director, Orchestre de chambre de Paris

“At last these lovely scores are being made available to us all! The composer of Carmen deserves nothing less!”

Sir Mark Elder, Music Director, the Hallé Orchestra

“Hugh Macdonald, the intrepid editor-in-chief of the New Berlioz Edition, has now turned his attention to five nearly forgotten operas by the composer of Carmen and The Pearl Fishers, Georges Bizet. The editions are at once scrupulous in their scholarship and ready for use in the opera house. How wonderful that we might finally hear some of these works again, and in the way that the composer intended!”

Ralph P. Locke, Emeritus Professor of Musicology, University of Rochester

“Everyone knows Carmen, but none of us properly knows the musical background to this most famous of operas: most of Bizet’s earlier operas languish in corrupt editions, which hinder both revival and serious study. In this context, Hugh Macdonald’s project is one of the most important in 19th-century operatic archeology. His vast experience in this repertory makes him the ideal editor; we all owe him a huge debt for undertaking such an essential work of recuperation.”

Roger Parker, Professor Emeritus, King’s College London

“Companies like Santa Fe and Saint Louis often present rarely heard operas that deserve to enter the repertory, but it can be challenging to find authentic and reliable materials for these works. Producers, artists and audiences alike benefit immeasurably from the availability of stylish critical editions that illuminate unfamiliar operas while minimizing the risks and complexities of assembling those productions. Knowing that Hugh Macdonald’s new editions of Bizet’s ‘other’ operas will soon be available is a welcome gift to opera producers worldwide.”

Charles MacKay, former General Director Santa Fe Opera and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.
